Queen & Parliament Is Changing

Toronto’s legendary furniture retailers: Marty Millionaire have been an institution in the Toronto furniture scene since the 1960’s first opening up at Queen and Spadina then landing in their HUGE 40,000sqft location at Queen and Parliament. Brothers Marty and Norm Nefsky got an offer they couldn’t refuse a while back and sold up. The building needed a new roof and the 60 year old elevator was likely needing a replacement. The cost of those two plus the increasing property tax and insurance costs made the decision very easy for the brothers Nefsky.

Now the big question: Who’s the developer and how many condo units?? No units! This will not be a condo and according to this press release (from October not sure how this wasn’t on our radar) the not for profit group Free The Children will be taking over the site to create the WE LEARNING CENTRE.

“The WE Learning Centre marks a major milestone in our 20-year history of empowering young people to become active agents of change. As we look towards our next phase of phase of development, we are excited to have the support needed to further invest in service-based learning programs to ensure youth develop the 21st century skills they need to succeed academically, in the work force and as active citizens,” said Free The Children Executive Director Scott Baker.

The WE Learning Centre will serve two key functions:

  1. Global Learning and Empowerment: The Centre will allow Free The Children to better connect with educators and students around the world. Enabled through state-of-the-art technology and a dedicated community space, it will promote greater learning and connection with the schools we serve.
  2. Global Headquarters, Programming Support and Administration: The Centre will act as a headquarters for Free The Children, providing an innovative and professional space to host the dynamic teams that bring our programs to life, including WE Schools, We Day, and our Adopt A Village global program.

We’re super excited for this project and what that means for the Queen & Parliament community. We’ve already seen a spike in Corktown area real estate prices and we should continue to see this upward trend continue. There is still some great value here especially in commercial property (but in freehold and condos as well) so ara@property.ca to get in touch or live chat below for more info on the area.
