The Lanes at Context King West – Pass or Fail?

If you are familiar with the King West area (learn more about the communities here & here) you know this building. I have had a crush on this structure for years! (is that healthy?) Every time I would pass by the urge to stop and stare was overpowering. The beautiful arched windows are one of the many features that make 620 King St West one of the more unique pieces of Toronto’s history. Over the years the owners have done a decent job maintaining it however, the need for major repair seems obvious as of late. There were rumors back in 2010 of a boutique loft development and the plans were to preserve this building. Present day, Context Developments has got their hands on this property as well as the entire block North to Adelaide! Quite an impressive land assembly, it must have taken them quite a while to get that done.

As sad as I am to see this beauty go down, I am quite impressed with Context’s respect for the streetscape and their obvious passion for good urban development. If you look at the site plan and renderings you can see the intricate brickwork and cobblestone lanes moving residents and their guests from South to North offering restaurants, shops, and a public courtyard for all to enjoy. This is a refreshing change from the intrusive, obnoxious, poorly designed glass boxes that line Toronto’s Downtown streets. I think Brad Lamb would even appreciate this development (although he’d never admit it!).
